Off duty officer responds to dog attack in his neighborhood

Posted:

COLONIE, N.Y. – An off duty police officer came to the rescue of a pet owner and her dog while the small pet was being mauled to death.

The owner said she was taking her dog out for his final walk because it was scheduled to be put down around 10:30 Monday morning. The owner said the dog was old and sick.

However, the walk turned into an attack when a neighbor's pet allegedly got loose and mauled the small dog.

Colonie Police say the incident happened around 9:30 a.m. According to authorities, the dog was attacked by an American Bulldog that jumped a fence, defeated a muzzle it was wearing, and started to repeatedly bite the dog on the leash.

Witnesses say the bulldog's owner tried to pry their pet off the toy dog, but could not. A number of bystanders also attempted to get the aggressive dog off of the other dog, but were unsuccessful.

The off duty Albany Police Officer, who lived down the street from the incident, heard the screams from the small dog's owner and did his best to stop the attack.

Police say he cleared everyone away from the animals, waited until they and the dogs were in a safe area, and did fire one shot near the dogs. The aggressive dog broke away from the other dog and ran back towards its owner's house. Neither dog was hit by the officer's shot.

The dog that was attacked was taken to a local animal hospital and was euthanized because of its injuries. The aggressive dog's owner voluntarily turned over the dog to Colonie Animal Control, and it was taken to a local animal hospital. It was euthanized at the request of the owner.
