Watervliet Avenue fire overnight displaces eight

ALBANY, NY – Firefighters battled a blaze at 44 Watervliet Ave. overnight.

They got the call at approx. 11:15 p.m. and had the fire under control an hour and a half later.

When they arrived they noticed heavy smoke, and found a fire in the basement.

While looking for occupants inside, firefighters also found a fire in the attic, which had climbed up inside the walls. The roof later collapsed.

All the residents of the three apartments in the building got out safely. One woman was taken to a local hospital to be checked for smoke inhalation.

The building is considered a total loss, and five of the eight residents were assisted by the Red Cross.

The cause of the blaze is under investigation, but officials say it is not believed to be suspicious.
