Benefit for fire victims in Troy

LANSINGBURGH, N.Y. – A benefit was held on Sunday for a family who lost their belongings in a fire earlier this month.

The fire broke out in Lansingburgh on Fifth Avenue, on April 3, the same building where authorities found the body of 19-year-old Vanessa Milligan, who was nine months pregnant. That fire destroyed Jennifer Lavender and Jeff Cook's home as well.

The family lost everything, saying they grabbed a purse and their baby. Lavender's co-workers at Mariposa Studio in Loudonville hosted Sunday's benefit. The event ran 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. at St. Augustine's Hall on 114 Street and Fourth Avenue.

More than 120 local businesses have donated to the benefit. Tables were lined with food, raffles and gift baskets.

Troy Police announced on Friday that the fire that killed the pregnant teen and displaced Lavender and Cook, was set intentionally. The incident is now being investigated as a double homicide.
