Bishop Edward Scharfenberger ordained as Albany Diocese Bishop

ALBANY, N.Y. - There was a lot of pomp and circumstance to the ordination and installation of Bishop Edward Scharfenberger on Thursday.

The 65-year-old will be the Albany Roman Catholic Diocese's 10th Bishop and take leadership over 330,000 Catholics.

Scharfenberger had been a Monsignor serving in New York City. Thursday's events started with hundreds of bishops and priests lining the sidewalk leading up to the entrance to the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception.

New York Cardinal Timothy Dolan was in Albany for the ceremony and delivered the homily. The ceremony was expected to last about two and a half hours. By 3:30 p.m., Bishop Scharfenberger was officially ordained with the three symbols of the episcopal office, including the ring, the mitre, and the shepherd's crook.

Prior to the ordination, NEWS10 ABC met with Scharfenberger while he was till bishop-elect to see what he hopes to see happen during his time as bishop.

"To be a good priest, to pray with people, to listen to people, to bring out the best in them and also to ask them to bring out the best in me," he said.
