Family loses belongings and five pets in Slingerlands fire

SLINGERLANDS, N.Y. — A Wednesday morning fire in Slingerlands consumed a house and displaced a family of four.

A serious fire caused no serious injuries, but the family lost all of their belongings, along with five of their six pets.

The fire stemmed from a reported couch fire just before 9 a.m.

"Two people were home. Both of them were able to get out of the building," Slingerlands First Assistant Fire Chief Joe Farley said. "I believe one of them suffered from minor smoke inhalation but appears to be fine."

The homeowner's son was asleep when the house caught fire. He said the fire spread to an oxygen tank and caused an explosion. He and his brother managed to rescue their dog but were unable to save the five cats.

"Our problem is because we can't make interior attacks," Farley said. "We have to fight everything from the outside, so we've got to locate those hotspots and get those extinguished."

The cause of the fire is still under investigation by the Bethlehem Police Department.
