BURLINGTON, Vt. – A Colchester, Vt. man was sentenced March 31 for producing child pornography.
Derek Thomas, 46, was sentenced to 15 years in prison for producing child pornography with a real Vermont child. Thomas was also sentenced to eight years of supervised release after he completes his prison term.
A South Burlington Police Department discovered that an individual in Colchester was offering to share child pornography on the internet in December 2011. A search warrant was obtained and executed at Thomas' residence in March 2012.
Forensic investigators found hundreds of images and videos of child pornography on a laptop. Thomas was arrested that day. A forensic examiner subsequently found thousands of images and videos of child pornography on Thomas' iPod, iPhone, laptop computer and computer hard drive.
Examination of the devices showed Thomas posted as a teenage boy and coerced a 12-year-old victim to take sexually explicit videos and to send them to Thomas. Thomas offered the victim gifts in exchange for the videos.
Vermont's U.S. Attorney also said Thomas failed to threaten the victim if he did not comply. Thomas also placed a hidden video camera in the victim's bathroom.
Thomas pled guilty to producing child pornography in December 2013. He was detained in jail throughout all phases of the prosecution.
