Cuomo: "Donate Life Registry" in state budget

ALBANY, N.Y. - Only 22- percent of New York residents are enrolled in the "Donate Life Registry"which has prompted Governor Cuomo to initiate a change.

Currently, the registry functions through the Department of Health and people are able to sign up through the DMV, voter registration, and enrollment forms.

However, Cuomo said the new state budget allows for the transfer of administration of the state donor registry to a non-profit organization that has experience with organ, eye, and tissue donation.

The change was needed since New York is ranked 50 in donor designation and has the third highest need for transplantable organs.
