State Police: Man stole woman's purse, hid in trunk of car

BRUNSWICK, N.Y. – State Police say a man stole a purse from an elderly woman then hid in a car trunk.

According to authorities, Tyler Swart, 29, was arrested on Saturday at the Price Chopper on Hoosick Street on Saturday. State Police were conducting an unrelated investigation in the parking lot of the supermarket when a Trooper was approached by an elderly woman who said that someone had taken her purse. She said she was loading groceries into her car when the incident occurred.

The purse contained cash, checks, and credit cards.

A witness told police that they saw a male subject take the purse while the woman was distracted. He said the suspect then walked away and entered a nearby parked car.

The Trooper checked the car, but no one was inside. A female told police that she was the owner of the car and allowed the Trooper to check the trunk. When the trunk was opened, Swart was allegedly located inside with the stolen purse.

State Police say Swart was the boyfriend of the owner of the vehicle.

Swart has been charged with Grand Larceny 4th Degree and Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance after a crack pipe and a small amount of cocaine was found on his person. He was also wanted on a warrant for Petit Larceny in the City of Troy.

Swart was processed and arraigned in the Town of Brunswick Court and remanded to the Rensselaer County Jail.
