Schenectady police warn of electric bill phone scheme

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. -- The Schenectady Police Department would like to make the public aware of an ongoing phone scheme.

Police say individuals are calling businesses in the area claiming to be from a division of National Grid collecting overdue bills.  These individuals call the business claiming that they owe a certain amount and if that amount is not paid within the next few hours, their power will be shut off.

These individuals, in some cases, instruct the business to purchase green dot pre-paid credit card or cards and call them back to give them certain numbers from the purchased cards.

The Schenectady Police Department is urging the public to use caution if receiving these types of calls.  The business or homeowner should call National Grid (a phone number listed on the monthly bill) themselves to confirm the status of their account.
