Some NARH Northern Berkshire Family Medicine facilities moving

NORTH ADAMS, Mass., - A few facilities with North Adams Regional Hospital will  be relocating soon.

Northern Berkshire Family Medicine will relocate to the third floor of the Ambulatory Center this upcoming Monday. Northern Berkshire OB/GYN is relocating to 7 Park Street in Adams on Monday as well.

Northern Berkshire Healthcare said all hospital medical records will stay at the North Adams Regional Hospital site for now.

Community members and officials met to discuss the latest on the possibility of reopening the hospital's emergency room. Residents say time is of the essence, as they now have to travel much further for crucial emergency care.

Resident Jessica Broga said she had to travel to Berkshire Medical Center in Pittsfield on Sunday, and waited six hours in the emergency room just to be seen. She said that she is battling several medical conditions and the new status quo is a major inconvenience.

"We live five minutes from our hospital up here and I could've gotten a lot faster care up here than in Pittsfield, not saying Pittsfield's a bad hospital," said Broga.

As the North Adams community fights for its hospital, there are signs of a partial resolution. The Berkshire Medical Center, which is slated to take over emergency services at North Adams Regional, has filed an application to reopen the ER. It's now awaiting federal and state approval.

There is no time frame yet on when that will happen, but Governor Deval Patrick said he is working to expedite the process. He's also looking to restore other services in North Adams.

"The other thing that we're working on is the transfer of an existing license for hospice and for VNA services. That is a mostly federal process," said Patrick.

Meanwhile, Attorney General Martha Coakley said her office will be back in court Thursday to develop a plan for Berkshire Medical to take over emergency services.

On Wednesday, the Medical Staff of North Adams Regional Hospital has donated approximately $100,000 to Ecu-Health Care, the health care access organization in North Adams.

Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts announced on Wednesday that members will have continued access to the quality health care they need. BCBSMA will be on-site for members and employer accounts on April 4 at the following locations to answer their questions and concerns:

  • Town of Adams, Town Hall Selectmen's Room, 8 Park Street, 9 a.m. – 12 p.m.
  • Williams College, The Log, 78 Spring Street, 12 p.m. – 3 p.m.
  • North Adams Council on Aging, Mary Spitzer Center, 116 Ashland Street, 12:30 p.m. – 3:30 p.m.
