Mass. officials work to reopen NARH

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. – North Adams residents gathered at a community meeting Tuesday, and officials in attendance assured them of their efforts to reopen North Adams Regional Hospital.

Senator Ben Downing was in attendance at the meeting. He said wherever he's traveled across the state, everyone asks about the status of NARH. He assures them the future is bright.

"I know Berkshire has commitments to these workers here tonight – and those that aren't here, who worked at NARH – trying to make sure they provide them with the stability," he said. "They serve this community already, they care about this community deeply, they've been a great partner in this process, and we want to make sure they continue to be."

Lisa Marie Pisano was a scheduler in radiology at NARH. She sees first-hand how hard her representatives are working and is happy with their progress so far.

"I can't thank them enough. I know they are out there every day, and that's what we need," she said. "And I believe that we will get back a full-service hospital. It's not going to happen all at once, but it's going to happen."

Time, however, is essential. Jessica Broga is physically suffering from the lack of proximity to healthcare.

Broga had to travel to Berkshire Medical Center in Pittsfield on Sunday and wait six hours in the emergency room before she was seen. Broga is battling several medical conditions, and she said the status quo is a major inconvenience.

"We live five minutes from our hospital up here, and I could've gotten a lot faster care up there than in Pittsfield," she said.

Downing said that once BMC gets both state and federal approval to operate a satellite facility, it will take approximately seven to ten days to open the emergency department at NARH.
