Galway school bus driver called a hero for saving a father from a wreck

GALWAY, N.Y. – A local school bus driver is being called a hero after pulling a driver from a burning car wreck last week.

The Galway School District driver is being credited with saving the life of a young father, who along with his infant son, was trapped inside their burning pickup truck after it slammed head on into the bus.

The bus was totaled, but the in-bus video has helped to tell part of the story.

The truck was driven by a Milton man, who had his seven month old infant son secured in the back seat. State Police say the driver, Andrew Trosan, 22, may have fallen asleep while driving last Monday. Police reports state the man crossed the center line on Route 45 in Galway.

Timing proved to be everything for the bus driver, Casmir (Chuck) Dziegiel, 71, as he had just dropped off his last student five minutes prior to the accident.

Dziegiel remained calm and was able to call in the accident to his dispatcher, but his thoughts were quickly turned to the pickup truck.

"All of a sudden flames the person grabbed the baby out of the passenger side," said Dziegiel.

A Good Samaritan, Derek Ricciardi, 32, was on the road at the time of the accident, and helped to pull the infant from the burning vehicle.

Dziegiel noticed the driver was still inside the car, unable to move because of a broken leg.

"That's when he said my leg is broken that's the way it happened," explained Dziegiel.

State Police say both the father and the baby survived the accident. Dziegiel is now being called a hero because of his actions, but he only credits the training he and other Galway drivers have received.
