Two men credited with saving father and son from burning vehicle

GALWAY, N.Y. – State Police say a father and son were saved from a burning vehicle on Monday March 24.

State Police in Charlton say they responded to a head-on personal injury auto accident on County Route 45 in Galway. They say the accident involved a school bus and a pickup truck.

Following the preliminary investigation, authorities say they determined that a Ford pickup truck driven by Andrew Trosan, 22, heading east on County Route 45 crossed over the center line and struck a Galway school bus heading west. Casmir (Chuck) Dziegiel, 71, was driving the bus.

Police say the school bus was not occupied by students at the time of the collision. However, Trosan's 7 month child was in the back seat of the pickup truck. The child was properly restrained and uninjured.

Directly after the accident Trosan's vehicle instantly caught on fire. Trosan was injured as a result of the accident and was unable to remove his son and himself from the vehicle according to police.

State Police say another motorist Derek Ricciardi, 32, was traveling behind the school bus when the accident occurred.  Ricciardi ran over to the pickup truck and rescued Trosan's son from the vehicle as it was on fire.

Although injured, Dziegiel rescued Trosan by dragging him from the burning vehicle to safety.

The school bus was equipped with video and audio of the interior of the school bus at the time of the collision. Police say the video captures a view of the exterior through the side windows and it captured  Ricciardi and Dziegiel rescuing the father and son.

All individuals involved in the collision were taken to the hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.

State Police say Ricciardi and Dziegiel should be recognized for their valiant and lifesaving efforts.

An investigation into the collision revealed that Trosan fell asleep causing him to drift into the opposite lane. Trosan was issued a traffic violation for failing to keep right

Galway Fire Department and EMS also responded to the scene on Monday.
