QUEENSBURY, N.Y – Police arrested a Clinton, N.Y. woman for burglary at the SPCA of Upstate New York.

Deirdre Smith, 19, was charged with Burglary in the Third Degree, Criminal Mischief in the Fourth Degree and Petit Larceny.

Smith is accused of breaking a window at the SPCA of Upstate New York, entering the building and stealing a dog. The dog was recovered and returned to the SPCA of Upstate New York.

A campus patrol officer at SUNY Adirondack had seen the story of the stolen dog from the SPCA on social media. He then witnessed Smith with the dog while at the SUNY Adirondack dorms, detained her and contacted authorities.

Smith cooperated with the investigation and told investigators that she is very compulsive and wanted a dog for companionship. No one else is believed to be involved.
