ALBANY, N.Y. -- Three men who led police in a vehicle pursuit on Wednesday have been charged with weapons and narcotics possession.
On March 26 at 1:00 p.m., officers from the Troy Police Department attempted to stop a vehicle in regards to an ongoing investigation. The vehicle fled from the officers down Interstate 787 towards the City of Albany. The officers lost sight of the vehicle near the Interstate 90 exchange and stopped the pursuit.
Moments later, officers from the Albany Police Department observed the vehicle on Quail Street near Western Avenue and attempted to conduct a traffic stop. The vehicle fled from the officers to the Dunn Memorial Bridge where it struck the concrete wall and came to a stop. A loaded .9mm handgun was recovered at the scene.
The 19-year old driver, Dahmeek McDonald, jumped off the ramp from the Dunn Memorial Bridge while attempting to flee from the officers. He was quickly apprehended and taken into custody, and treated at the scene by firefighters for injuries he sustained during the incident. He was transported to Albany Medical Center, and is listed in stable condition.
McDonald was also found to be in possession of 8.5 grams of crack cocaine. He was charged with Criminal Possession of a Weapon and Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance. He was also cited for numerous violations of the New York State Vehicle and Traffic Law.
Javon Daniels, 17, also leaped over the rail and jumped from the ramp while attempting to flee. Daniels climbed over the rail and dangled approximately 40 feet off the ground while Lieutenant Joseph Carnevali and Officer William Dicarlo attempted to rescue him from falling. As the officers approached Daniels to pull him back to safety, Daniels let go and fell to the ground below. He was apprehended and taken into custody, and treated at the scene by firefighter for injuries he sustained during the incident. He was transported to Albany Medical Center Hospital where he is listed in stable condition.
Daniels was also found to be in possession of 2.5 grams of crack cocaine. He was charged with Criminal Possession of a Weapon and Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance.
Donovan Mays, 17, also climbed over the rail in attempt to jump from the ramp but had reservations. He climbed over the rail and immediately held onto a nearby cable. Officer Michael Romano quickly grabbed onto Mays' coat and held onto him to prevent him from falling to the concrete below. Officer Romano was able to pull Mays back onto to the roadway and take him into custody.
Mays was charged with Criminal Possession of a Weapons. He was arraigned in the Albany City Criminal Court and remanded to the Albany County Jail.
McDonald and Daniels are currently in police custody awaiting their arraignment.
