SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – A local mom and son shaved their heads in honor of a family member who lost his battle with cancer.
"I did it for my twin brother," Marcelle McAdoo said. "He passed away a year and a half ago from brain cancer."
Marcelle said he misses his brother every day.
"Everything," he said. "His smile, his laugh. Everything"
Marcelle's brother Myles was diagnosed with cancer at two-years-old and fought hard until he was nine.
"Then when he was nine, he was diagnosed with a different tumor on his brain stem," Myles' mother Laurel said.
Doctors told Laurel that Myles wouldn't win the new fight with cancer.
"There was nothing that could be done after we had fought for so long," she said.
Myles passed away in July 2012, but his life was recently celebrated when his mom and brother decided to shave their heads for the St. Baldrick's Foundation.
"We had a blast," Marcelle said. "I think it was an amazing moment. Yeah, it was amazing."
Laurel let another child who was fighting cancer cut her hair.
"So I asked him if he wanted me to shave my head, and he was like, ‘Yeah, totally!'" she said.
Laurel said she's proud to shave her head to support cancer research and is disappointed in a Colorado school for not supporting their students.
In Colorado, Kamryn Renfro shaved her head to support her best friend who is undergoing chemotherapy. However, her school said her shaved head violated school policy, and she was temporarily suspended from school.
"That young girl should have been applauded for standing by her friend," Laurel said. "That's so positive, and the community and the school and the family, everybody should have come to support her in those efforts."
Because just like Kamryn, Marcelle shaved his head out of love.
"And I felt like doing it would make him happy," he said.
A fundraiser for St. Baldrick's is taking place on Saturday, April 5 at Proctors Theatre in Schenectady. More than 100 volunteers have signed up to shave their head to show solidarity with children fighting childhood cancer.
