Fire destroys old hotel in upstate village

STAMFORD, N.Y. (AP) - Authorities in a northern Catskills village are trying to determine the cause of a fire that has destroyed a historic former hotel a New York City artist had planned to convert into a gallery.

Fire officials in Stamford in Delaware County tell The Daily Star of Oneonta that the fire was reported around 10:45 a.m. Tuesday in the 116-year-old Rexmere building. Officials say the flames spread quickly through the seven-story wooden structure.

More than 150 firefighters battled the blaze, but by 1 p.m. the building was destroyed.

No one was hurt. Officials say the building's caretakers weren't home at the time.

The Rexmere Hotel opened in 1898 and operated for more than 50 years. It was converted into an educational center in 1965.

Manhattan-based artist Hunt Slonem planned to buy the property and turn it into a gallery.
