ALBANY, N.Y. - A Hollywood star hoping to shine some light on the education budget was at the Capitol on Monday.

Emmy award-winning actress and education advocate Cynthia Nixon, who starred on the hit show "Sex and the City," was in the Capital Region Monday. She'll be joined by school superintendents, academics, and other officials.

Advocates with the Alliance for Quality Education say the current budget falls short of what the Board of Regents has recommended. They will be seeking more support for schools as Governor Andrew Cuomo and lawmakers try to agree on a budget by April 1.

"We may be number one in spending, but we also score very high on another chart. We are number five out of 50 states in terms of how that money is spent inequitably and unfairly," said Nixon.

Nixon said she voted for Cuomo in 2010 after he said educational inequality was a major civil rights issue and the state is responsible for addressing it.
