Neighborhood association hopes league activities keep kids active, safe

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. -- The Mont Pleasant Neighborhood Association hopes to get kids active and keep them out of trouble with league activities.

Saturday at Bridge Christian Church, families had the opportunity to sign their children up for all sorts of sports.

It was an all-day sporting event, not to play, but gather information.

"Trying to give kids an opportunity to see what positive physical activities are available to them," said Sharon-Linn Schmidt, president of the association.

It was an opportunity for many families in Schenectady to learn about summer activities and even sign up for things like baseball and free boxing lessons.

Schmidt says it's all in an effort to make the community a safer place by providing positive activities for kids to do.

"A lot of kids congregate around corner stores loiter and so forth," she said.

She wants to redirect that energy into nearby Orchard Park by fixing it up and allowing groups to hold team events there.

"We are talking about having some derelict buildings taken down around the park to open it up because it's secluded," she said.

There was also another new club available this year, one the kids themselves requested, to get basketball teams up and running.
