TROY, N.Y. – Troy Police arrested a burglary suspect and parole absconder Friday morning with the assistance of a rookie K-9 officer.

Troy Police were dispatched to a home on Euclid Avenue around 8:40 a.m. for a reported burglary. A 10-year-old boy was home alone and heard a noise. A male suspect had broken in the rear door with a hammer and was in the process of stealing property from the home.

The boy called police and gave an accurate description of the intruder when he found the man in the kitchen.

The suspect was gone when police arrived. Patrols searched the neighborhood while rookie K-9 Obie and his partner, Officer Craig Faby, surveyed the home. Obie picked up a scent from a footprint and led his partner to a home on the 40 block of Euclid Avenue.

Faby observed a broken window at the rear of the home, and additional units began a search of the building. Police said a suspect was located in a closet covered with clothes in an attempt to avoid arrest.

The suspect resisted arrest, but officers and Obie were able to get control of the suspect. No officers were injured, and the suspect sustained minor injuries. He received medical treatment.

Shannon Lee Bruce of Troy was arrested and charged with two counts of Burglary in the Second Degree, two counts of Criminal Mischief in the Fourth Degree, Obstructing Governmental Administration in the Second Degree, Resisting Arrest, Petit Larceny, and Attempted Grand Larceny in the Fourth Degree.

Bruce was also a parole absconder and was wanted on an active parole warrant. The 44-year-old was remanded to the Rensselaer County Jail without bail.
