Med students discover residency placements during ‘match day’ ceremony

ALBANY, N.Y.—Albany Medical College students, faculty, and staff gathered together Friday as fourth year medical students opened their residency placement envelopes.

The 138 students received placements all over the country. Only 34 students were matched to programs in New York State.

"Match Day marks an emotional rite of passage for medical students, and is one of the most highly anticipated events in their medical educations, as it determines not only where they're training, but also where they'll reside for the next few years of their lives," said Henry Pohl, M.D., vice dean for academic administration at Albany Medical College.

Thirteen students will stay at Albany Medical Center and fill residency positions.

Albany Med's residency programs participating in the Match include anesthesiology, emergency medicine, family medicine, general and preliminary surgery, internal and preliminary medicine, medicine/pediatrics, neurology, neurosurgery, obstetrics and gynecology, orthopaedic surgery, otolaryngology, pathology, pediatrics, physical medicine and rehabilitation, plastic surgery, psychiatry and vascular surgery.
