Mass. police officer critical after car crash

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – A Springfield police officer is in critical condition after getting into an off-duty car crash Monday night.

Police said 26-year-old Juan Tavares was traveling south on Maple Street when he struck the median. The car spun out of control and hit a tree on the opposite side of the road.

Tavares was sent to Baystate Medical Center where he is in critical condition. Officials said the investigation may suggest speed being a factor.
