TROY, N.Y. – Fire crews responded to a fire on Maple Avenue in Troy Monday evening.

Fire Chief Tom Garrett said at least 25 cats were found in the home. He said it was a hoarding situation.

The house was cluttered with personal belongings making it even more difficult for firefighters to get inside and fight the fire. Garrett said there was only about a one foot aisle for responders to walk.

First responders also had a hard time convincing the elderly homeowner to evacuate the property. Officials said she was upset about her animals and did not want to leave them behind.

Officials said the homeowner estimated 20-25 cats in the house, though responders believe there may be more.

Cohoes Animal Control arrived to the scene to start removing the cats; however, they were not able to remove all the animals Monday night. They said they would return Tuesday morning to continue the removal.

A few cages with food in them were found in the home, though the animals will need medical attention. Official said the cats would be safe to stay in the house overnight.

There were no other reports of any injuries.
