COXSACKIE, N.Y.—A sergeant at the Coxsackie Correctional Facility was treated for facial injuries after being punched in the face several times by an inmate.
The inmate, Deon Williams, 22, punched the sergeant in the face while he was being escorted back to his cell on March 8.
Williams allegedly stopped to talk to another inmate on his way back to his cell, when told he was not allowed to stop on the prison tier to talk, Williams dropped his bag and violently punched the sergeant several times.
The sergeant was sent to the hospital for treatment of two blackened eyes, blurred vision, and facial swelling. He was treated and released later that day.
"This unprovoked attack that occurred this past Saturday is a prime example of the type of serious assaults that are occurring to our members statewide. As the prison population continues to become more violent measures need to be taken to keep our members safe and hold the inmates accountable for their actions," said Mid-Hudson Region Vice President Michael Mazzella.
The investigation is ongoing. No criminal charges have been filed at this time.
