Bennett to participate in St. Baldrick's Shave in Solidarity

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – Union College men's ice hockey head coach Rick Bennett will participate in the "Shave in Solidarity" event at Proctors Theatre on April 5.

Bennett and a mix of Union student-athletes will shave their heads to show solidarity with children fighting childhood cancer from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Proctors Theatre on State Street in Schenectady.

The Union Athletics community is part of the over 100 volunteers have already signed up to shave their heads. For the third year in a row, men, women and children of all ages from across the Capital Region will "Be Brave, Get Bald" in order to raise funds to fight childhood cancer.

St. Baldrick's fundraising events takes on a celebratory spirit with men, women and children lining up to have their hair shaved off. Raffles, airbrush tattoos, face painting, caricatures by a local artist, bake sale and live music...besides a bunch of baldies walking around create an uplifting, family-friendly environment that is so inspiring, that those there to cheer on friends and family being shaved have been inspired to step and be shaved themselves. Many observers become "shavees" and return the next year with their own teams to raise funds.

With nearly 100 volunteers already signed up for 2014, the event is expected to break its own record of people willing to answer the call to "Be Brave, Get Bald" at the third St. Baldrick's Foundation head-shaving event. Those who plan to shave their heads have raised over 62% of the 2014 goal of $20,000 in advance of the April event.
