NYS Gaming Commission discusses shock-wave therapy

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - The New York State Gaming Commission will meet in New York City Wednesday to talk about certain types of therapy for race horses.

Amoung the topics on the table is a proposal for the use of "shock-wave therapy" on thoroughbred race horses. Shock-wave therapy is when there's an application of external pressure waves to an area on the horse to promote healing.

However, there are concerns because the area is usually numb for a few days after the therapy.

This rule would closely regulate the use of shock-wave treatments so that the horses could not be raced until the resulting numbness wears off.
