Vt. House Committee keeps smoking age at 18

BENNINGTON, Vt., - Older teens will continue to be allowed to buy a pack of cigarettes in the Green Mountain State.

A Vermont House Committee has emphatically rejected legislation to raise the age for buying tobacco products from 18 to 21 years old.

Tuesday's vote comes after the state's health commissioner, Dr. Harry Chen, came out opposing the legislation, saying 18-to-20-year-olds are legally adults and should have the freedom to smoke.

Chen said the state's efforts are better directed at anti-smoking education campaigns.
