Governor Cuomo’s panel releases regulation recommendations for standardized testing

Posted: Updated: Date / Time

ALBANY N.Y. – A panel created by Governor Cuomo has looked into the rollout of the Common Core standards, and released recommendations.
Cuomo's panel suggests capping the amount of instructional time that can be used for standardized testing, and test preparation. The panel also wants to protect students from inappropriate high stakes testing by banning standardized bubble test through the second grade.
This comes during a time when legislature is scheduled to vote on whether to re-elect Cuomo's panel.
One organization has released information notifying parents how to opt out of their children out of taking the Common Core standardized test, which are to be administered next month.
The New York State Allies for Public Education created an ad telling parents there is a way around your child having to take Common Core exams without it being a consequence to them, their teacher or the school. The organization says parents just have to write and submit a refusal letter on behalf of their child.
A spokesperson for the New York State Education Department tells News10ABC all students are expected to participate in state assessments as part of the core academic program. Any students who do not participate in the assessment are reported to the state as "not tested."
