Colonie motel owner facing additional code violations

COLONIE, N.Y. -- A Colonie motel owner already facing close to $700,000 in fines for his now shuttered properties is again facing more code violations.

Arjun or Alex Patel, pleaded not guilty in Colonie Town Court on Thursday. He was charged with more than 400 code violations for the conditions discovered at his Blu Bell motel on Central Avenue. He is already facing hundreds of violations over his Skylane motel.

For years, Patel was paid millions by area taxpayers to house destitute sex offenders and the down and out.

Residents of his motels lived in rooms that had holes in the floors, moldy ceilings, and exposed wiring--among many other potentially dangerous conditions.

In late February, NEWS10 ABC confirmed that an Albany County inspector who was supposed to inspect at least one of the motels was fired.

NEWS10 ABC's Anya Tucker was in court on Thursday and asked Patel to respond to the allegations against him. When asked if he would live in one of his motels, he said yes. When asked if he would live there with children, he said yes.

Patel did temporarily move some displaced Blu Bell and Skylane residents to his Super 8 motel on Central Avenue. That's the same motel where Albany County Sheriff's investigators say they made two arrests over alleged sex trafficking earlier this week.
