WASHINGTON – The D.C. Council has voted to ease the marijuana laws in our nation's capital.
The nearly unanimous vote lessens penalties for public and private consumption of the drug and decriminalizes the possession of small quantities of pot.
Under the new law, possession of an ounce or less of marijuana is no longer a criminal offense but a civil offense that comes with a $25 fine.
The public consumption or marijuana is still a misdemeanor.
The bill lowers the penalty for smoking pot in public from a $1,000 fine or six months in jail to a $500 fine or 60 days in jail.
