Students, teachers, push for higher education

Posted: Updated:

ALBANY N.Y. - Hundreds of students, teachers and staff from the New York United Teachers Union across the state will be meeting with lawmakers at the Capitol Wednesday morning.

This group is meeting to give the message of support for higher education.

Advocates say the SUNY and CUNY budgets have been cut by nearly $2 billion and that's driving up tuition and putting quality and affordable public education at risk.

They are asking lawmakers to enact the public higher education quality initiative that calls on the state to do a number of things.

This includes increased funding for SUNY and CUNY four-year campuses and SUNY teaching hospitals also create more funding to hire more full-time faculty and staff, and invest in student financial aid.

Advocates got into town on Tuesday and on Wednesday they will be leaving for the Capitol at 8 a.m. to meet with lawmakers.
