MINEOLA, N.Y. (AP) - Suburban New York police are providing few details following the attempted killing of a Long Island businessman outside his high-end Long Island catering palace.
Gary Melius was recovering from a gunshot wound to the head on Tuesday at a hospital. He was shot by a masked assailant on Monday while getting into his car at Oheka Castle. That's the Long Island catering hall, where he also lives.
Police have not identified any suspects.
Melius is a well-known political activist on Long Island. His friends include former U.S. Sen. Alfonse D'Amato, who has been sending out Twitter updates on the case.
Melius also is known as a generous benefactor to numerous charities. The head of one cancer charity says Melius gives the group discounts to hold fundraisers at the catering hall.
