New Albany Fire Chief sworn in

ALBANY N.Y- Albany Mayor Kathy Sheehan has sworn in Warren Abriel Jr., as new Chief of the Department of Fire and Emergency Services Tuesday.

Abriel is a lifelong Albany resident, who has served in the Albany Fire Department since 1972. He has 42 years of firefighting experience and was appointed earlier this month to become fire chief by Albany Mayor Kathy Sheehan. The former Fire Chief Robert Forezzi stepped down before the New Year.

The Mayor said Abriel has been working his way up through the ranks and has been second in command since 2008, serving as the Executive Deputy Chief. Sheehan said his commitment to the fire department and his extensive background in public administration and management makes him the best fit for the job.

She went onto say firefighting is more than just putting out fires nowadays; it's also about performing lifesaving skills which she says Chief Abriel understands.

"He is a person who embraced the fact that the only constant in life is change. It's new challenges and we need a fire chief that recognizes and embraces those challenges to continue to improve our fire services," said Sheehan.

Chief Abriel also comes from a long line of firefighters. His great great grandfather was on the first fire department when the Albany Fire Department became professionalized in 1867.

Chief Abriel said he's excited for the new journey and hopes to live up to the expectations that come with the title. He says he waited for a long time to be considered and his hard work has finally paid off.
