ALBANY, N.Y. -- A 20-year-old Albany native is making a significant impact in the boxing world after winning the New York State Golden Gloves and the 2014 USA Elite National Boxing Championship making him the top boxer in his weight class in the nation.
Abraham Nova says that from the moment he picked up a pair of boxing gloves at age 6 and put together his first jab combo, he knew boxing is the place where he could stand out.
With four brothers and five sisters, he says it's easy to get overshadowed.
"Everything they've done, they've succeeded in, and I want to be a part of successful family also," he said.
But that's not the only thing motivating Nova to be the best boxer he can -- he also wants to help support his mother's career as a minister.
"If I buy her a church, if I'm successful, I can financially help her with her churches and with the ministry, that's a big goal for me, because I want her to be a part of my success."
Family is what drove Nova to become the top boxer in his weight class in the country, but he did take some lumps before getting there.
Before moving to his current weight class, where he's undefeated, Nova lost 9 matches. When asked what he learned from those losses, he said you can't wait for the judges to make the decision; you've got to take your fate into your own hands.
"It take's hard work and dedication to get there, you can't just wake up and not do nothing, you got to wake up and work hard," he said.
