Adirondack Phantoms leave Glens Falls, future of arena uncertain

GLENS FALLS, N.Y. – The Adirondack Phantoms are leaving Glens Falls, but residents hope a new team or future events will help keep the civic center open.

The Adirondack Phantoms have played at the Glens Falls Civic Center for five years, but the team is moving out of state after the current season.

Their absence leaves nearly 40 days without scheduled events at the arena.

"It's 38 dark days here that we have to try and fill," Glens Falls Councilman-at-Large Dan Hall said.

The civic center has been a major part of Glens Falls for decades hosting close to 7,000 people at a time for concerts and sporting events.

Residents remember the history of professional hockey in Glens Falls, including when the Adirondack Red Wings won four separate Calder Cups.

"The excitement that this facility brought to the community was unbelievable," Hall said.

Some fear losing the AHL team will lose some of that excitement and revenue for the city.

First Ward Councilman Jim Campinell grew up in Glen Falls.

"They're definitely going to lose some revenue, restaurants, shops," he said. "It's all going to be dependent on what we can fill those 38 days with. That's going to be the ticket."

The city is also looking to nearby towns that use the building to pitch in and help with the cost.

"Because they use it, so why not support it," Campinell continued.

The fight to bring a new AHL team to Glens Falls isn't over.

"It's not a done deal, yet, that we're not going to have a team here. If we don't have one this year, we're going to really push hard next year," Civic Center Contract Administrator Ben Driscoll said.

The civic center is partially supported by tax dollars, and officials are working to bring big acts to the area.

Future events already scheduled at the arena include high school sports tournaments, Disney on Ice, the Harlem Globetrotters and professional wrestling.
