POULTNEY, Vt., - Vermont State Police have arrested a man in connection to the death of a two-year-old.
According to authorities, on February 19 around 6:20 p.m., authorities responded to a call about an injured child that had been brought to the Rutland Regional Medical Center emergency room. Hospital staff informed police, as required by law, that the child exhibited signs of head trauma. The child was taken to intensive care at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center to receive further treatment.
On February 21, the child, Dezirae Sheldon, died. An autopsy revealed the cause of death was blunt force trauma to the head and it was considered a homicide.
Following an investigation into the case, authorities arrested Dennis Duby, 31, on Saturday. Police say Duby is the step-father of the child and has been charged with 2nd degree murder.
Duby was sent to Marble Valley Regional Correctional Facility for lack of $250,000 bail. He is expected to be arraigned on his charge on Monday.
