COLONIE, N.Y. -- NEWS10 ABC has confirmed with four independent sources that an Albany County inspector who was supposed to inspect at least one of the motels recently shut down in Colonie has been fired.
The inspector has filed a grievance, and a CSEA spokesman tells the station that the matter now appears to be headed toward arbitration.
The owner of the motels, Alex Patel, has been cited with 299 code violations at Skylane, and he now faces 418 violations for the Blu Bell location.
Officials said Patel was making money off the county by housing homeless, displaced families, and some sex offenders. Patel owns the Blu Bell Motel, Super 8, and a Golden Corral but the county said they have not placed anyone at the Blu Bell location in years.
The county inspector who gave a passing inspection to Skylane was suspended in late January. At the time, Albany County Executive Dan McCoy said he noticed discrepancies in DSS inspector's checklist from the motel in August.
Paperwork from the visit gave the rooms a passing grade – but it's likely the inspector didn't even set foot on the property.
Hundreds of photographs from the investigation into the two Colonie motels have been released to NEWS10 ABC, showing the horrible living conditions.
