Troy water main break fixed, road to remain closed

TROY, N.Y. - Crews have fixed a water main break on Wednesday evening after working around the clock on Sixth Avenue in Troy.

The call for the water main break came in around 11:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Troy Fire Chief Tom Garrett said the water break spans 20 inches. That break in a 12 inch line is what caused the roadway to be submerged in water late Tuesday night.

Although crews have repaired the pipe, the road will remained closed Thursday in order to make repairs to the road itself.

Mayor Lou Rosamilia closed off Sixth Avenue between Jacob Street and Federal Street earlier Wednesday morning to help crews who are working hard. After digging for hours through frost and dirt, workers were able to fully expose the pipe by mid-afternoon.

A supervisor with the Department of Public Works said he believes the hole found in the 12 inch pipe is the result of old infrastructure. Deputy Mayor Pete Ryan says the cold weather could also be a factor.

Commuters are asked to find alternate routes to work on their evening commute. Currently, there are no major back-ups on the road.

Ryan said no one in the area is without water and right now only one hydrant is without water.
