Troy man arrested, charged with attempted robbery in Kokopellis incident

TROY, N.Y. – A 30-year-old Troy man has been arrested in connection to the Kokopellis melee in late January.

Kerif Hassan Burns was arrested at his residence in relation to the attempted robbery of Officer Brandon Cipperly at Kokopelli's Club on Saturday, January 25.

Police say an investigation determined that burns attempted to forcibly remove the baton in the possession of Officer Cipperly when he entered the establishment in response to a reported assault. His actions were recorded on video.

Burns is charged with Attempted Robbery and Obstruction of Governmental Administration.

Originally, five people were arrested and several officers were injured after police attempted to subdue an assault at the location.

According to authorities, Troy Police officers were requested to help stop an assault that was reported in progress at Kokopellis on Fourth Street shortly before 3 a.m. on Saturday.

As officers arrived, they found a crowd at the door which was moving onto the street. Police say a number of people were arguing and taking part in physical confrontation.

Troy Police officers entered the bar trying to find the assault victim, however there was a crowd of 200-250 people, authorities said. Troy Police Captain John Cooney said responding officers were "subject to kicking, punching, pepper spray and a fire extinguisher being completely emptied via the spraying of the powder content on the officers."

Officers were able to locate and remove the 23-year-old victim, a bar employee, from the scene. Police say he suffered from lacerations and bruising to the face.

Patrol units were called to the scene in order to control the large group of people who left the bar.

Cooney said a garbage can was thrown, resulting in an injured officer and a broken rear window of a Troy Police patrol unit. He said two more officers were also injured as they were hit in the head with bottles, which were being thrown at them.

Two other teens were arrested in February in connection to the melee.
