10th anniversary of Columbia High School shooting

EAST GREENBUSH, N.Y. – Sunday marks the 10th anniversary of the shooting at Columbia High School.

On February 9 2004, Columbia High School was the scene of a shooting when 16-year-old Jon Romano opened fire at the school.

Michael Bennett, a special education teacher trying to stop the student, was shot in the leg. There were no other injuries.

Principal John Sawchuk was considered a hero in that case, when he took down Romano and was able to get the gun away.

Since the incident 10 years ago, there has been a practice evacuation drill and East Greenbush Police have also participated in active shooter training.
