Albany Airport open but delays, cancellations expected

COLONIE, N.Y. – The Albany International Airport is open and operating Wednesday despite the snow storm.

Thankfully, for travelers there have only been a few delays and cancellations.

Loretta Villani from Poughkeepsie flew out earlier in the day to Chicago for a week, for what she called 'a little granny time', and the only thing she was concerned with was the airport being so empty.

"When I checked into a motel late last night, the gentlemen in the reception, in the lobby, said to me "we're very, very full."' so he couldn't put me on the first floor like I had initially requested. He said because of all the delays from the airports," explained Villani.

Ron Anderson and his family's 8 a.m. flight to Fort Lauderdale was cancelled Wednesday. They did manage though, to find a flight on Saturday, hoping the weather will improve.

"We got flights. They were very helpful, Southwest was. I'm sure every airline is because people are frustrated and some are in emergency, almost emergencies to get back for funeral or whatever, that's the way it goes," said Anderson.

Norma Arsenault from the Adirondacks is headed to Indiana for her grandson's first birthday. She stayed at the Day' Inn next to the airport Tuesday night, in anticipation of the snow. But her flight was delayed from 11:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Arsenault explained she isn't frustrated because she is used to this kind of winter weather.

For those who have been unlucky with their traveling plans, like the 30 or so people who were stranded at the Day's Inn Tuesday, manager Lucky Cercunjanin said he's there for them.

"I see, especially like people of the ages, with the luggage and they're getting stuck and we never turn nobody out. What we're doing, we like even if the person comes in and has no flight voucher to us, we give 'em room," explained Cercunjanin.

One reason the airport isn't packed on Wednesday is because some airlines pre-cancelled their flights, meaning they decided the weather wasn't going to be suitable to fly in and automatically re-booked their passengers traveling schedules.

Travelers are advised to keep in touch with their airlines for updated flight information. Travelers can also check the airport's website and go to ‘Flight Information' and click on ‘Arrivals or Departures.'
