Dozens to lose jobs once local Kmart stores close

CLIFTON PARK, N.Y. – The Kmart stores in Latham and Clifton Park are scheduled to close, and over 100 people will lose their jobs.

The big-box retailer confirmed 74 people work at the Clifton Park store, and the Latham store has 61 employees. Most of the workers are part-time.

Kmart said in a statement, "The store closures are part of a series of actions we're taking to reduce on-going expenses, adjust our asset base, and accelerate the transformation of our business model. Those associates that are eligible will receive severance and have the opportunity to apply for open positions at area Sears or Kmart stores."

Connie Wooster lives in Clifton Park and has been shopping at Kmart for over 20 years.

"Very disappointing," she said. "I seem to find things that I can't find at other places, and nobody hassles you if you're looking for something."

Clifton Park Town supervisor Phil Barrett said his focus will now be on finding a new business or businesses to replace the Kmart.

"We'll look forward and regroup and work to reinvigorate that area," he said.

Barrett said officials have been working on a town center plan that would make redevelopment easier, and they hope the Kmart site can be its first test.
