Newborn Pulse Ox test requirements go into effect

NEW YORK, N.Y. -- A new test for newborns officially goes into effect across New York on Monday.

The Pulse Ox test, a simple and non-invasive test that measures the level of oxygen in the blood stream, will be given to every newborn before discharge from the hospital.

A low level can be an indication of a congenital heart defect -- the most common kind of birth defect. Nearly 1 in 100 infants born each year have it.

The legislation was introduced and passed in 2013. This screening is estimated to help identify more than 90 percent of such heart defects.
