Nearly 50 calves killed in early morning barn fire

Posted: Updated:

EASTON, N.Y. – An early morning fire at a Washington County barn killed 45 calves.

A fire broke out around 2 a.m. Monday at Sunset View Farm. A passerby called 911.

Four fire departments were called to the scene, but the fire was already fully-involved when they arrived.

Easton Fire Department Chief Craig Hansen said crews did not face any major issues putting out the blaze, and they had it knocked down in one hour.

"The wind was blowing in the right direction, so it didn't spread to the other buildings," he said. "It was contained to that one building."

Forty-five calves died in the fire, and the barn is a total loss.

Washington County Fire investigators are working to find an exact cause for the fire, though Hansen believes a heat lamp may have been the cause.
