Education advocates react to Cuomo's budget proposal

Posted:

GUILDERLAND, N.Y. – Education advocates spoke out on Wednesday after Governor Cuomo delivered his budget address.

Guilderland Central School District Superintendent Marie Wiles explained what the governor's proposed budget would mean for her district. Cuomo's budget proposal included almost $22 billion for education throughout the state. This is an increase of over $800 million or nearly 4-percent.

Wiles and other education advocates say districts across the state have been pushed to the brink after years of not being properly funded. Wiles joined with other superintendents, as well as state lawmakers and activists, in a press conference that was organized by the Alliance for Quality Education.

Those who attended said their message to the governor was simple. They asked that before Cuomo pushed for universal pre- k statewide and high tech classrooms, he should provide more money to meet the existing needs.
