FULTONVILLE, N.Y. – Massachusetts State Police have delivered gifts to the family of fallen New York State Trooper David Cunniff.
Trooper Cunniff died on December 17, the day after his patrol car was struck by a tractor trailer on the NYS Thruway. Cunniff was parked as he conducted a traffic stop at the time of the accident.
On Wednesday, Massachusetts State Police delivered toys and other items that were collected over the holidays for Trooper Cunniff's family.
Cunniff, 35, was a 9-year-veteran of the New York State Police. He is survived by his wife and two children.
Up to 1,500 State Troopers from across the country gathered to honor Cunniff at his funeral in December at Grace Fellowship Church. Cunniff was a member and a guitar player in the worship band at the church.
Trooper Cunniff's vehicle and the car involved in the traffic stop were struck by a tractor trailer driven by 65-year-old Gary Blakley of Ridgeway, Ontario.
The tractor trailer was travelling in the right lane, left the roadway and hit both cars. The impact forced Trooper Cunniff's car off the right shoulder and partially ejected him from the vehicle. The tractor trailer continued on and struck Heller's car trapping Heller in his vehicle. Heller had to be extricated by the Amsterdam Fire Department.
Heller was taken to Albany Medical Center after the accident and was in fair condition.
State Police say the investigation into the accident is ongoing.
