ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - The New York National Guard says its military honor guards ended up conducting 11,585 funerals for veterans of the Army and Air Force last year.
Heading into the final week of 2013, state military officials had said they expected the honor guard teams to perform 11,560 ceremonies by Jan. 1
Nearly 10,000 of the military funeral services were conducted by the Army National Guard's eight regional honor guard teams. The rest were performed by the Air Guard's six honor guard teams.
Under federal law, any American who has served in the armed forces and wasn't dishonorably discharged is eligible for military funeral services.
Since being organized in 1999, the National Guard honor guards have participated in more than 100,000 military funerals across New York state.
