COLONIE, N.Y. – Three late night robberies in three different areas have detectives across the Capital Region trying to find a link between the similar crimes.
Police believe all three are possibly related. The first robbery happened at a Colonie Sunoco. Police have released surveillance photos of the suspects from this robbery in hopes of catching them with the public's help.
Lieutenant Robert Winn with Colonie Police said at around 10:30 Sunday night, two suspects caught on video surveillance, entered the Sunoco at 616 Broadway and threatened the clerk with handguns.
"They came in. They announced that it was a robbery and they demanded cash and cigarettes," said Winn.
The men took off with nearly $500 in cash and cigarettes.
About an hour later, Troy Police responded to the Cumberland Farms on Pauling Avenue for a report of a robbery.
"The suspects entered the store and as soon as they entered they displayed handguns," explained Troy Police Captain John Cooney. "The clerk was ordered to comply as far as giving them cash from the register."
Only 15 minutes after the two men made off with cash and cigarettes from the Cumberland Farms, Albany Police responded to a Sunoco on Southern Boulevard.
Police say two males armed with handguns demanded cash. The workers complied and they fled the store with an unknown amount of cash.
"It's recommended through our advice and their training that they do comply," said Cooney. "We see that to be the safest route for the clerk to take."
The President of the New York Association of Convenience Stores Jim Calvin said store owners can use tools to help protect themselves during these types of hold ups.
"The combination of training limiting the amount of cash proper surveillance and good communication with police agencies," said Calvin.
Troy and Colonie Police say the suspects in both cases were males, one wearing a ski mask, one wearing a bandana. Both men were wearing dark hoodies.
"Now the possibility exists that these subjects were involved in three robberies in one night all involving handguns so the potential for extra violence and someone getting hurt is certainly high," said Winn.
No one was injured during the robberies.
If anyone recognizes any of the suspects or have any information, they are invited to call police.
Suspect 1 – unknown race male (possibly white), 6' tall, black bandana covering his face, black pants, black shoes and a grey hooded sweatshirt – armed with a black handgun
Suspect 2 – unknown race male, shorter than suspect 1, black ski mask, black pants, black sneakers and black hooded sweatshirt – armed with a black handgun
Suspect 3 – (driver) – unknown race male, no further description
Vehicle – white sport utility vehicle
Anyone with information about the robbery is urged to contact the Colonie Police Department at 783-2744.
