BRUNSWICK, N.Y. – A 21-year-old Troy man has been arrested after police say he stole returnable bottles and cans from a Boy Scout troop.

State Police in Brunswick arrested David A. Castagnier II for Petit Larceny after he was caught on surveillance cameras taking returnable bottles and cans from bins maintained by Boy Scout Troop 537.

In the past six weeks, beginning around Thanksgiving, Scout Master Wayne Christiansen had noticed that the two donation bins located at the town library and the town hall in Brunswick had no returnables in them.  Christiansen said the loss was about $575 based on previous donations.

The scout master set up cameras at the two locations, and when he checked the cameras on January 3, they both recorded the same man taking the returnables out of the bins. The suspect was later identified by troopers as Castagnier.

He was arrested and admitted to taking the bottles and cans from the bins.  Castagnier was released on an appearance ticket, and is due in Brunswick Court on January 15.
