Person taken to Westchester burn center after fire in Schenectady
SCHENECTADY -- One person was taken to the burn unit of Westchester Medical Center after a large Christmas Eve fire in Schenectady that destroyed three buildings.
According to Schenectady Deputy Chief Michael Gillespie, the fire broke out around 10 p.m. in the area of 35 Moyston Avenue. Firefighters arrived to find massive flames pouring out of 35 Moyston, eventually spreading to two other 2-story homes.
For hours firefighters tried to get the blaze under control in frigid temperatures with the water freezing up power lines, making it very slippery. Gillespie said crews with the Department of Public Works had to drop salt on Moyston overnight as all the water froze on the street.
With the frigid temperatures Gillespie had to rotate crews every couple of hours to keep the firefighters warm.
No firefighters were injured.
During the battle to extinguish the fire, police say two people got into a fight at the scene. One person ended up being treated at Ellis Hospital for injuries related to the fight.
The Red Cross is now helping nine people from two families that were displaced with a temporary place to stay. One of those families has three children: ages 5- and 2-years, and 4-months, according to the Red Cross.
While the fire was raging, neighbors told NEWS10 ABC they were there for the victims. Desiree King says the victims lost almost everything, including Christmas presents.
"The lady grabbed what she could," King said, "She grabbed the box of presents for the baby."
"We gave them blankets and everything. We just gave them everything to help them out," another neighbor said.
Firefighters remained on scene for much of Christmas Day, keeping a section of nearby State Street closed. It reopened to traffic just before 2 p.m.
The cause is still under investigation.
